Bill would
allow schools flexibility

Sen. Bill Stone and Rep. Jerry Turner are pushing a bill that would
help school districts place more emphasis on teaching and maybe a
little less energy on administrative regulations.
SB
2238, the Senate version of HB 112, would provide statutory authority
to school districts to place more emphasis on educational outcomes of
students. Five districts a year could be approved and step around some
regulations in order to try something innovative.

Armed robbery
suspects arrested

people have been arrested and charged in two armed robberies that took
place in January, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

other suspects, who have been identified, are at large, he said.

Shooting in
subdivisions still a concern

year ago in February, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors adopted
a county ordinance prohibiting the discharge of firearms in
subdivisions on lots of under five acres.

Former city
alderman, football star dies at 82

David
“Nub” Strickland made a name for himself on the football field – from
high school, to college, to the pros.
He
was a gridiron star at Holly Springs High School, Northeast and Memphis
State before finishing his professional career with the Denver Broncos.
He died Sunday at the age of 82.

new police officers were hired and four new police cars approved for
purchase during a recent meeting of the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen. Two
candidates for patrol officers were presented by chief Wiliam Hollowell
and later hired to serve on the police force upon his recommendation. Full Story
‘Blind Date with a Book’ The Marshall County
Library is hoping to encourage readers to broaden their horizons a
little in February by enjoying a “Blind Date with a Book.” The library
has a “Date a Book” display. The books are wrapped so their identities
are unknown until the reader gets home. Will it
be fiction or non-fiction, mystery or romance, classic or contemporary?
The readers may end up enjoying a book they may have never chosen on

Fireworks show discussed; sirens ordered By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly
Springs alderman discussed a proposed venture between the city and the
Main Street Chamber to put on a big fireworks display for an
Independence Day celebration. Alderman-at-large
Tim Liddy introduced the topic at the January 7 meeting, saying some
people say they have to go to Olive Branch or Oxford to treat their

Byhalia police officers respond to 29 calls, including theft, accidents The Byhalia Police Department responded to 29 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – miscellaneous, 8; escorts,
2; thefts, 1; disturbances, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 2; assists, 3;
medical, 3; robberies, 1; trespassing, 1; and alarm calls, 6. Byhalia police officers also made five arrests during the past week, according to Looney.

calls included – disturbances, 6; alarms, 13; larcenies, 4; accidents,
4; domestics, 2; assists to agencies, 7; assaults, 6; burglaries, 4;
funeral escorts, 4; 911 hang-ups, 1; auto burglary, 5; robbery, 1; auto
theft, 1; shots fired, 1; checks on homebound, 3; and 49 miscellaneous

Area students urged to participate in art contest Students
across Mississippi are invited to get outdoors and participate in the
2014 North Mississippi Fish Hatchery Youth Art Contest. Each student
must submit a portfolio including entry form and artwork to the Visitor
Education Center (VEC) by May 15. The contest
is sponsored by the Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and
Parks (Foundation). Winners in four age categories will have their work
included in Mississippi Outdoors magazine and posted on the
Foundation’s website. First place winners will receive a complimentary
