Family and
friends gathered Monday morning in front of Holly Springs City Hall for
the official swearing-in ceremony of police chief Dwight Harris. Mayor
Kelvin Buck read the oath of office. With Harris on his right are his
wife Charisse, and children Joshua, Tyler and Jasmine. Others gathered

The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen went from within its ranks to find a new chief of police and a new captain. Dwight
Harris was promoted to police chief and Elijah Wilson to captain. The
duo will head up the leadership of the police department. Wilson will
lead investigations and narcotics. In statements
before the board, Harris said, except for a short hiatus, he has been
with the department since first arriving in 1999 – accumulating eight
or nine years with the department. He is a resident of the city,

Arrests made in robbery, burglary By SUE WATSON Staff Writer One
suspect has been arrested and charged with armed robbery and another is
being sought in connection with a home invasion on Waites Road in the
Lake Center area, Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said. Investigator
Jason Mills said a call came in August 6 at about 10:48 a.m. to the
300 block of Waites Road. When deputies arrived, they found a
13-year-old boy who reported a small grey Ford model car had pulled
into the driveway and the occupants asked to speak with his uncle. Full Story

Tax rolls open for viewing By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
property tax rolls are open to view during August at the Marshall
County tax assessor’s office on the square in Holly Springs. The
rolls include real property such as land and business and office
equipment, fixtures and furniture, vehicles, and mobile homes. Full Story
Stones learn about Turkey By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Sen. Bill Stone, of Holly Springs, and his son Will were guests of the Turkish government recently. They
visited as participants in a cultural exchange program, sponsored by
Dialog Institute of Mississippi, a U.S.-Turkish relations foundation.
The foundation sponsors the annual trip, which is intended to
strengthen the economic and social ties between Mississippi and Turkey,

Summer youth workers honored By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Summer Youth Program in Holly Springs was a total community effort,
said mayor Kelvin Buck at a recent luncheon for the students. Twenty-nine workers were employed for several months in city departments, schools and local businesses. Full Story
Presley to hold meeting in Slayden Northern
District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley will hold a
Community Meeting on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Slayden Baptist Church from
6 p.m. until 7 p.m. This meeting is free, and the public is invited to attend. The church building is located at 2534 Highway 72 in Lamar. Full Story
Man charged with assault and burglary By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly
Springs police officers made an arrest Sunday in a domestic violence
and burglary incident, according to chief Dwight Harris. He
said Leon Williamson, 33, of Holly Springs, was arrested and charged
with domestic violence-aggravated assault and burglary of a building. “Leon
Williamson was apprehended following an altercation with his
girlfriend,” Harris said. “He fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival
in the 100 block of Lutton Cove. Williams was later spotted in the area
of Hubcap Drive, where officers took him into custody without incident.”
Mayor, board hammer out budget By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
City of Holly Springs is forging a new fiscal year budget in special
meetings this summer. The meetings consist of reviewing the current
year’s budget and actual expenditures in the general fund and at the
Holly Springs Utility Department. Mayor Kelvin
Buck briefed aldermen in July on some salient facts regarding revenues
and expenditures and the dilemma the city faces in trying to stretch
the anticipated revenue as far as it will go next year. Full Story
Byhalia police go to 40 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 40 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – miscellaneous, 10; escorts,
6; juveniles, 1; thefts, 1; disturbances, 1; motor vehicle accidents,
5; medical, 12; trespassing, 1; and alarm calls, 3. Byhalia police officers also made four arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney. |
