Volvo picks Chickasaw Trail

Developer William Adair announced to the Marshall County Board of Supervisors last week that Volvo Group North America will locate its Central Distribution Center at a site off Highway 72 in the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park.
Adair is a partner in the development of Gateway Global Logistics Center in Marshall County and Fayette County, Tenn.
He said Volvo closed the deal Thursday, May 1, at 5 p.m. and the concrete is being poured for the first pad – a 1 million-square-foot facility northeast of ROXUL.
Three murders last week in county

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is investigating three murders that took place last week according to Maj. Kelly McMillen.
A suspect was arrested Wednesday, May 7, in connection with a stabbing death May 6, he said.
Testing changes cause uproar

Superintendents were thrown a curve ball late in the game when it comes to state testing, and the leader of the Marshall County School District isn’t happy.
Jerry Moore said since late last spring, school districts were told by the Mississippi Department of Education to begin teaching and blending Common Core standards, even though this year they would be judged by student assessments that did not utilize those standards.
Mayor Malone reviews progress in Byhalia

The Byhalia mayor gave an update on progress in the town after thanking Sarah Sawyer, executive director of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce, for a good job.
Two grants to restore the old Byhalia school auditorium have been received and work will begin this fall, Mayor Phil Malone said during the recent Chamber luncheon.
City police respond to 129 calls
Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 129 calls last week, according to Capt. Darryl Bowens.
The calls included – disturbances, 7; alarms, 8; accidents, 7; funeral escorts, 2; domestics, 9; assists to agencies, 4; assaults, 4; larcenies, 10; malicious mischief, 3; 911 hang-up calls, 2; auto theft, 1; sexual assault, 1; robbery, 1; and 70 miscellaneous calls. The dogcatcher responded to nine calls.
New Volvo facility to employ 250

The Volvo Group announces that it will build a 1,000,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Central Parts Distribution Center in Marshall County, to support its Mack, Volvo and UD truck brands, as well as Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Penta.
The facility will employ about 250 people, and is the keystone of a comprehensive optimization of the company’s North American parts distribution network.
Byhalia police officers respond to fire, burglary
The Byhalia Police Department responded to 37 calls during the past week.
Chief Gary Looney released the following report – miscellaneous, 8; escorts, 4; juveniles, 3; thefts, 1; disturbances, 3; domestic, 1; animals, 1; assists, 1; fires, 1; burglaries, 1; medical, 9; and alarm calls, 4.
Byhalia police officers also made three arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney.
Early deadlines for May 29 edition
The South Reporter announces early deadlines for its May 29 edition, due to the Memorial Day holiday.
Deadline for classified advertising is Friday, May 23, at 12 noon. Deadline for all other advertising, including legal notices, is Friday, May 23, at 5 p.m. Deadline for all news and photos submitted for that week’s newspaper is also Friday, May 23, at 5 p.m.
The South Reporter office will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27.
“We appreciate everyone’s help in meeting these early deadlines,” said editor Barry Burleson.
Fairgrounds use increasing

Jerry Bolden, with the board of directors of the Marshall County Fairgrounds Association, reported that use of the facility continues to increase and to diversify.
“We had a good first quarter,” he recently told the board of supervisors.
