Suspects
arrested in burglaries

Two
suspects have been arrested in connection with burglaries in Marshall
and Benton counties, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
He
said leads developed in the case following tips about a 1990s model
grey Mercury Grand Marquis that had been seen at one of the burglarized
residences in Benton County. Subsequently, all patrols were placed on
high alert to look for a vehicle matching the description, Dickerson
said.

Storm causes
damage, outages

Several
areas in Marshall County had trees down over roads and buildings during
Saturday night’s thunderstorm which rolled through the area, according
to Larry Hall, county administrator/road manager.
The
heavier damage occurred in spotted areas with lighter damage here and
there, he said. Most of the trouble in keeping roads open was with
clearing trees.

Holly Springs artist • Acetelli contributes to Peace Project By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
Los Angeles, Calif., art gallery, The Whole 9, has spearheaded a
project to do something about people who suffer in faraway places of
the world. Mark Acetelli, a Holly Springs artist,
has joined Lisa Schultz of Los Angeles in helping raise money for
crutches for the people of Sierra Leone and to build little temporary
houses for the homeless in the Philippines, recently hit by a record

City studies switching vehicles to natural gas By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
potential to convert Holly Springs service vehicles over to natural gas
fuel was discussed at a recent meeting of the mayor and board of
aldermen. Don Hollingsworth, general manager of
the Holly Springs Utility Department, briefed the board on a recent
seminar on the topic which was attended by city employees and the

Holiday gala a success By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly
Springs had another first in December. The holiday gala and awards
ceremony held by the Main Street Chamber and the Tourism and Recreation
Bureau was a dressy affair with lots of humor and lots of honoring. Opening
remarks including acknowledging the reason for the season. Tourism
assistant director Shamecca Fitts and Pastor Telsa DeBerry reminded the

Police chief proposes Explorer program By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly
Springs Police Chief William Hollowell has asked the mayor and board of
aldermen for authorization to establish an Explorer program for high
school students ages 14-18. He said his vision is to initially involve a combined 14 students from Marshall Academy and Holly Springs High School. Full Story

Pedestrian killed in accident By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Vernon
S. Dennis of Memphis, Tenn., was struck and killed by a vehicle
December 19, according to Marshall County coroner James Richard
Anderson. He said the accident occurred at 8:14
p.m. Thursday when the victim and a companion were walking on the
off-ramp of U.S. 78 (at Victoria) to get gasoline for their vehicle.
Dennis, 41, was hit by the vehicle while he and a companion were trying
to flag a ride, Anderson said. The companion was not injured. The
driver of the vehicle was said to have not seen the two pedestrians who
Anderson said were wearing dark clothing. Both the driver and the
companion called 911 shortly after the accident, Anderson said.
