Honoring ‘Miss Lois’
Lois
Swaney Shipp, a longtime pillar in the Holly Springs community, was
honored this past weekend during the 25th annual Christmas Tour of
Homes. She stands next to her portrait at the Marshall County
Historical Museum, which was open for the holiday tour. Lois Swaney
Shipp was president of the Marshall County Historical Society at the
time of its first meeting in the old Women’s Dormitory Building (1903)
of the Mississippi Synodical College. Others present at the April 27,
1970, meeting were Mrs. Otto Clayton, Mrs. Ethel Abernathy, Mrs. John
C. Williamson, Mrs. Peel Cannon and Mr. Lanier Holland. The Historical
Society was later supplanted by the Marshall County Historical Museum
Society, after saving the old college building from certain demolition,
thus paving the way for the extensive collection now enjoyed some 43
years later. Lois Swaney Shipp, affectionately known as “Miss Lois,”
has been the steady hand on the museum’s rudder for much of the past 30
years, since returning to Holly Springs from Vicksburg. While her daily
presence has been sorely missed at the museum since her move to Oxford,
the dedicated staff is continuing her legacy to preserve Marshall
County’s history and artifacts. |
City drainage a concern; sirens OK’d By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Flooding
in Holly Springs during heavy rains is a concern for the street
department, said Larry Miller, director of streets and buildings and
grounds. The issue of locating where water is
backing out of drains was studied during a heavy rain, according to
mayor Kelvin Buck, who said a survey of areas flooding is being taken.
The next step is to seek to unclog the drains that often become blocked
with rotted leaf detritus. Other blockages are due to collapse of the
drains built years ago from clay (terra cotta) materials, Miller said. Full Story
