Buck emphasizes teamwork

New Holly Springs Mayor Kelvin Buck repeated a formula for success – working together.

He took the oath of office, administered by Judge Ernest Cunningham, on the steps of city hall Monday morning.

“We must continue to raise the bar and put this city on the path to greatness,” said Buck, to loud applause from the large crowd. “There is no limit to where we can go.”

Judge halts work at cemetery

Preserve Marshall County and Holly Springs Inc. filed an injunction to stop work on restoration work at Hill Crest Cemetery Thursday, June 20, in chancery court in Oxford.

The plaintiff filed the complaint against three named defendants, Barnes and Brower, Inc., the contractor overseeing the cleaning and repair of monuments and the fence at the cemetery; IMS Engineers, the Jackson firm awarded the engineering contract for the work; and the City of Holly Springs.

Holly Springs rolls out red carpet for tourism group

Friday, June 21, was the first-ever visit to Holly Springs by officers and members of the Mississippi Tourism Association.

MTA works closely with the Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division and the Legislature to get the word out about great places for adventures in the state.

A splashing good time

The new Holly Springs splash pad, in Spring Hollow Park, opened Saturday morning after a ribbon-cutting ceremony (see page 12). One of the first to enjoy the splash pad was Ariana Cowan. It is located behind the Eddie Lee Smith Multi-Purpose Building.

Open-carry gun law put on hold by judge

A new law allowing adults in Mississippi to carry a handgun openly without a permit was challenged and blocked Friday, a few days short of taking effect.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith requested the law be blocked, according to media reports. Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd then granted the injunction and set a hearing for July 8. It will determine whether to extend the injunction.

City officers go to 64 calls

Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 64 calls for the week of Monday, June 24, to Friday, June 28, according to chief William Hollowell.

The police report was shortened due to early deadlines at the newspaper.

The calls included – disturbances 3; alarms, 8; larcenies, 3; accidents, 1; burglaries, 3; domestics, 1; funeral escorts, 3; 911 hang-ups, 1; assaults, 1, malicious mischief, 2; auto burglary, 1, and 37 miscellaneous calls. The dogcatcher responded to 7 calls.

One killed in accident on Friday

A Holly Springs man died at The Med in Memphis, Tenn., Friday night after he wrecked his vehicle on Highway 78, according to authorities.

The single-car accident occurred at mile marker 39 between Lake Center and Holly Springs.

Correction

In a story entitled “City honors outgoing administration,” that ran in the June 27 issue of The South Reporter, an error was made in attribution.

Alderman Russell Johnson was the person who presented a framed picture to the Mayor Andre’ DeBerry. Alderman Garrie Colhoun presented a plaque to the mayor.

Johnson said the presentation he made contained a picture of the mayor taken during the ribbon cutting for Eddie Lee Smith Drive and beside that was a certificate of appreciation signed by all the aldermen.

The South Reporter apologizes to Johnson and others for this error.
