Winners in the runoff election Tuesday, Nov. 27, were Virginia Armour and Bill Kinkade.
Armour was re-elected Marshall County election commissioner, District 3. Unofficial totals show Armour with 272 votes and Clista Ash with 222.
Kinkade was elected state representative District 52. According to unofficial totals from both Marshall and DeSoto counties, Kinkade received 1,346 votes to Jeremy Bryan’s 874.
Kinkade will fill a position vacated by long-time legislator Tommy Woods, who retired in July.
Alderman voices concern about rates
Alderman Russell Johnson has expressed concern about the rising costs of utilities in Holly Springs.
He said his concerns about write-offs of delinquent bills and the tax equivalency the city collects on utilities got his attention last summer while the new budget was being worked out.
City of Holly Springs set to celebrate 175th

The city of Holly Springs is celebrating 175 years (1837 to 2012) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 30 through December 2.
Alliance recognizes dedication of Bumpas

There was a family gathering at Alliance HealthCare System last week as the Alliance family honored Arleva Bumpas for 50 years of service to the hospital in Holly Springs.
Bumpas, in tears because of the unexpected recognition and party, was flanked by Dr. Kenneth Williams and wife Regina, Fern Howell, Maxine Palmer, Katherine Kellar Howard, Perry Williams, her husband Dean Bumpas, and many appreciative employees of the hospital.
Supervisors get legislative update

Although the Mississippi Legislature usually leaves Local and Private Bills to the end of the session, next year may be different, according to Gary Anderson, county consultant in Jackson.
He and Sen. Bill Stone reported to the board of supervisors November 5 on what to expect next session.
Marshall County man charged with sexual battery

A 6-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., following an alleged sexual battery by a man in the Watson community, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
The incident took place in the 400 block of Watson Road in the Byhalia area around 1:24 a.m. Sunday, he said.
Hunting season begins at Fitch Farms

Cool weather is coming and that means hunting season at Fitch Farms-Galena Plantation and All Ages field trials.
Hunting season begins to gear up in October but November 1 is the absolute latest day to start bird hunting, according to Sonny Jackson, who is helping oversee the hunts this fall. Drawing for the brace schedule is set for December 8. Field trials begin December 10, he said.
Holly Springs police respond to 106 calls
Holly Springs police officers responded to 106 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell.
Calls included – disturbances, 11; alarms, 24; larcenies, 2; assaults, 3; burglaries, 1; accidents, 6; assists to agencies, 2; 911 hang-ups, 3; auto theft, 1; domestics, 7; funeral escorts, 2; checkups on shut-ins, 2; auto burglaries, 1; shots fired, 2; run-away, 1; and 38 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to nine calls.
Town of Byhalia police officers respond to accidents, burglaries
The Byhalia Police Department responded to 36 calls during the past week.
Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; miscellaneous, 11; escorts, 6; assists, 2; motor vehicle accidents, 3; burglaries, 2; medical, 6; and DUI, 1.
Byhalia police officers made seven arrests last week and wrote 12 citations.
