Arrest net widens in kidnapping By SUE WATSON Staff Writer One
of two other suspects wanted in connection with the April 11 assault
and kidnapping of Charles Hardeman was arrested in Tennessee Monday,
according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The second suspect is still on
the run. Arrest warrants for Alexander Carter,
24, and Xavier Cornelius Parks, 31, of the 700 block of West College
Street, Saulsbury, Tenn., were issued by Marshall County Justice Court
this week, the sheriff said. Carter was picked up and taken into
custody by Hardeman County, Tenn., authorities Monday around 7 p.m. He
could be extradited back to Marshall County as early as Tuesday evening
this week, the sheriff said. Carter and Parks are half brothers. Parks
remained at large at presstime. Full Story
One dies in fire By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Authorities are still awaiting positive identification of the victim of a house fire Monday night. Marshall
County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said the victim is thought to be the
brother of Lamonica Campbell. She lived with him in the mobile home,
located at 45 Kent Road, that was burned out cold when investigators
were called to the scene. Full Story

Rufus Pennington of 1041 Highway 309 North is a man with many ideas but no place to put them to work. The
Marshall County Zoning Board turned down his request to operate a
concrete mix plant on his 15 acres located in a residential zone. He
also asked for a permit to operate a saw mill, but zoning turned that
down, as well. The board said he needs to locate property in a
commercial zone if he wants a concrete mix plant and saw mill. Full Story

The
Holly Springs Intermediate School gifted students in fifth and sixth
grades have prepared another market study for the city. The study was
presented to the Holly Springs mayor and board of aldermen at the May
15 meeting. Survey results indicated that
students believe there is not enough for young people to do in the city
or county. Activities students considered worthy of support included a
movie theater, a public gym and an arcade/golf facility. Full Story
Parcels in danger of being sold By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
number of parcels of real property in jeopardy from the 2009 tax sale
remains high, according to chancery clerk Chuck Thomas, who recently
reported to the board of supervisors. He said
there were about 891 parcels that had not been redeemed by owners, with
that number down to 837 unredeemed parcels after certified letters were
sent out reminding owners they are in danger of losing their property. Full Story
Yellow fever mania By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Assistant
librarian Robert Patterson has locked onto a project that he can’t seem
to let go of. He is trying to find the grave of every 1878 Yellow Fever
Epidemic victim in Holly Springs. So far, his
search on his lunch hour and after work and weekends has led him not
only to photograph about 60 of the 105 or so marked graves at Hill
Crest Cemetery, but he has also expanded the Yellow Fever Epidemic
exhibit at the Marshall County Historical Museum. The county library
now has several books about the epidemic in Mississippi. Full Story
City police go to 174 calls • Four suspects arrested on felony charges Officers
with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 174 calls over
the last two weeks, according to interim chief Lt. John Norman. Calls
were distributed as follows: disturbances, 17; alarms, 28; larcenies,
3; accidents, 8; assists to agencies, 6; domestic, 4; assaults, 1;
funeral escorts, 2; burglaries, 8; 911 hang-ups, 2; auto thefts, 2;
shots fired, 2; malicious mischief and miscellaneous, 87. The dog

Byhalia officers respond to 34 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 34 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2;
miscellaneous, 11; escorts, 5; thefts, 1; disturbances, 1; animals, 1;
assists, 3; motor vehicle accidents, 2; medical, 8. Byhalia police officers made seven arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney.
