Hummingbird festival this weekend This weekend
– Friday, Saturday and Sunday – the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in
Holly Springs will host the Hummingbird Migration Celebration and
Nature Festival. The award-winning festival
treats thousands of guests to renowned speakers, live animals, wagon
rides and a close look at the ruby-throated hummingbird, one of the

The angels in heaven must have been looking over two women in their burning home in Potts Camp last week. Both were saved by a relative and next-door neighbor who “accidentally” noticed their house afire from a bedroom window. Lisa
Clayton was asleep in a bedroom on the lower level of the house
adjacent to their beauty shop. Her mother, Carol Jean Davis, was asleep
in the recliner in the front room because she has been having problems

Buck pushes summer jobs By SUE WATSON Staff Writer State Rep. Kelvin Buck is at work on a plan to provide summer jobs for students in 2012. He
unveiled his plan for public/private partnerships before the Marshall
County Board of Supervisors in early August. He said if the county set
aside $70,000 in the 2011-12 budget, about 30 students could earn up to
$2,320 in two months to help their families with money to go back to
school. Overall, he hopes to find money for 100 students by asking
other entities such as Holly Springs, Potts Camp and Byhalia to include
money in their budgets. Full Story
ARC co-chair visits to discuss projects By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly
Springs recently welcomed representatives with the Appalachian Regional
Commission – Mike Armor, state director; Sandra Perkins, associate
manager, Tupelo; federal co-chair Earl Gohl; and chief of staff Guy
Land with the federal office. The four looked at
recently completed projects at Strawberry Plains, in Holly Springs and
over the county and listened to the ideas and dream projects of local

Police go to 85 calls The Holly Springs Police Department responded to 85 calls from August 29 through September 4. Interim
chief John Norman released the following report – disturbances, 2;
assaults, 3; alarm calls, 8; larcenies, 6; accidents, 4; funerals, 8;
burglaries, 3; 911 hang-up calls, 3; shots fired, 1; malicious
mischief, 3; law enforcement and medical assists, 2; miscellaneous, 42.

Perry inducted into Hall of Fame By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Chickasaw
elder Robert Johnson Perry is among three inducted into the Chickasaw
Hall of Fame, begun in 1987 to honor those who have made outstanding
contributions to the Chickasaw Nation. Perry
was inducted August 18, along with Jesse Green and chief Tishu Minko
(Tishomingo) at the Riverwind Casino in Goldsby, Okla., and joins 57

Byhalia blaze
Firefighters
responded to a house fire at 62 Oak Street in Byhalia at approximately
2:51 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. The house was a total loss. Five people
escaped from the house with no injuries, according to officials.
Assisting the Byhalia Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze were
firefighters from the Watson Volunteer Fire Department, Victoria
Volunteer Fire Department and Holly Springs Fire Department. |
