Update! Hernando police have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting late Saturday night, Oct. 3. Jeffrey Bateman, age 21, of 295 Palestine Road, Coldwater, was arrested at his residence Thursday, Oct. 8, about 8:45 p.m. and charged with three counts of aggravated assault, according to detective Michael White. The Hernando Police Department had issued a "Be On the Look Out" (BOLO) for the suspect, and White said the arrest came after a tip via Crime Stoppers. The shooting occurred October 3 between midnight and 12:30 a.m. (October 4) in the neighborhood of West Robinson Street in Hernando. When Bilethon Autry shot and killed his brother, Charlie Ray Hodges, on Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, some could say their father, Billy Ray Autry, lost two sons that day. But through tears, Billy Ray told The Oxford Eagle how he really lost Bilethon a long time ago. “Bilethon was already locked up,” Autry said Tuesday while sitting in a newly rented apartment at the Links. “He’s been gone. He’s just been locked up on the inside.” Work resumes on bypass road By SUE WATSON The North Holly Springs bypass road won’t likely be paved until next year but the remaining dirt work was begun last week. The project that was split into stages due to lack of funds several years ago. When completed, traffic coming into Holly Springs from Highway 7 North and Highway 4 East and Highway 311 will not have to pass through Holly Springs directly unless motorists have business in the downtown area. The bypass will tie into U.S. Highway 78 at the North Holly Springs Exit. County receives healthy audit By SUE WATSON State auditors reported only two findings, both minor, after checking the records of the Marshall County Board of Supervisors and all offices of the county. Auditor Chris Turnipseed with Watkins, Ward and Stafford, CPA, congratulated the county on a healthy financial report. There were no legal findings. Coleman: teacher, writer, collector By SUE WATSON Florence Wilkins Coleman taught school for 38 years, beginning her career as a high school graduate in one-room school houses in Marshall County. She retired from teaching at Henry School in Byhalia, and since 2001 she has published three books that consist of a collection of her own writing - poetry, essays and music - revival songs and tidbits of history. Police make drug arrest Holly Springs police reported one drug-related arrest and three burglary incidents for the week ending October 5. Steven Hampton, 35, of Holly Springs, was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 29, and charged with possession of cocaine, according to chief Robert Pearson. Bond for Hampton was set at $2,500. Byhalia police go to 34 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 34 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; motor vehicle accidents, 4; burglaries, 1; thefts, 1; animal-related calls, 5; medical assistance, 4; fires, 4; harassment, 1; miscellaneous, 7; damaged property, 2. Byhalia police officers also made two arrests during the past week. Man dies when ultralight plane crashes A Byhalia man was killed Friday afternoon when the ultralight plane he was flying crashed in a soybean field near Olive Branch. Louis Bassie Jr., 52, died when the aircraft went down at the end of State Line Road off Center Hill Road shortly after 4 p.m., according to The Commercial Appeal. It was near a private, grassy airstrip used by a group of people who fly ultralight planes.
